  Writing Independent Task写作独立题

  [Question]

Do you think it is a good idea to let students of 6-18 years old go to school 4 days a week but have an extra 90 minutes each day?

  [Response]

In recent years, shortening the school week to four days has become an increasingly common trend. Proponents of the four days school week—with an additional 90 minutes per day—tout various advantages such as improved student attendance and cost effectiveness. However, I still believe that the standard five-day school week is optimal for students of 6-18 years old.

First of all, longer school days can be extremely exhausting for students, particularly those in primary school. With an extra 90 minutes of school each day, students are less likely to be fully engaged and concentrated in their classes, which would be counterproductive to the intended goals. Elementary-aged students in particular would find longer school days undesirable due to their limited attention span. In addition, longer school days would result in longer school nights for students. Students operating on this schedule would get off school and return home later, and if they are involved in any extracurricular classes or activities, then they would return home even later. Therefore, the four-day school week is an overall exhausting option for most students, and they are likely to struggle to find adequate time to study during the week.

Secondly, four-day school weeks pose a challenge to working families who may not be able to find suitable arrangements for their children on the fifth day. This is especially the case for elementary-aged children who may not be trusted to stay home without supervision. The vast majority of parents work five-day schedules which require them to be fully present at work for eight hours per day every day of the week, so shifting to a four-day school week would be inconvenient to many families. In this case, parents would need to find potential daycare or transportation options for their children, which would lead to added costs. As a result, the four-day school week presents both a psychological and financial burden to working families.

Lastly, since most existing school districts operate on a standard five-day school week, it may be difficult to transition smoothly to a four-day school week, and there may be various unforeseen obstacles. In fact, most schools have not made the change to a four-day school week, and many do not anticipate to in the future. Thus, if one local school district shifts to a four-day school week, there may be numerous scheduling conflicts if there are citywide tests, competitions, extracurricular activities, and so on. These logistical challenges could eventually negate the anticipated advantages of a four-day school week, making it more of an inconvenience to students and teachers alike.

In conclusion, I do not think it is a good idea for students to attend school four days a week for an extra 90 minutes per day for the reasons stated.
