Some languages are increasing in use, while the use of many others is declining. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?(Word count=278)
2013年11月16日雅思A类大作文范文:
Ten Commandments were not only messages Moses got from God for the disobedient crowd, but also, at least to some linguists, a vindication that words can be a powerful bargaining chip even when God is on the other side of the table. However, as time slips away, some languages lost favour and becomes less spoken, while others thrived and spreads—a reality whose pros and cons cannot be analysed until some perspectives are introduced.
To language users, nationally or internationally, the popularisation of certain few languagesentails necessity and brings convenience. Conceivably, some languages for their lasting importance in political, cultural, and economic fields are bound to attract more users, English and Spanish being perfect examples. As a natural result, the spread and increased use of the languages in turn facilitate their users worldwide in terms of communication. In this case, the prosperity of major languages is understandable and advantageous.
On the other hand, the shrinking of relatively minor languages are equally reasonable. However cliché-sounding, globalisation does tend to feed and clothe the world in an increasingly identical manner, and languages are no exception. As the world is more inter-connected, global citizens pick up the same things out of free will or under pressure for better participation in the society. Yet, it is still unconvincing that the loss of certain languages and the cultures carried with them does harm to the world: languages, like everything else, are subordinate to natural selection and bound by the law of “Survival of the Fittest”.
In sum, it is advantageous for some languages to prosper for users’ sake, and there is safelylittle to no harm done when some other languages wane.
