Writing Independent Task写作独立题

  [Question]

Which one of the following do you think is the best way to get to know a city in a limited amount of time when you first visit it?

  1. touring historic sites

  2. going to markets or shops

  3. eating in restaurants and spending time in cafes

  [Response]

When visiting a new city, there are always plenty of enriching cultural activities to do. Some popular ways to get to know a city in a limited amount of time include visiting historic sites, going to markets or shops, or dining in a restaurant and spending time in cafes. As for me, I think the best way to learn about a new city is to tour historic sites.

First of all, historic sites offer a wealth of knowledge about the city’s historical legacy and cultural background. Well-preserved historical sites provide tremendous insight into the city’s past and development to the present day. By touring historic sites, people can directly engage with the community’s cultural history, deepening their understanding of society and the city’s place in the country or in the wider sociocultural context. Moreover, these historic sites often bring the history of the city alive for visitors, creating an all-around interactive and immersive experience that is undeniably memorable. For example, when I visited the Martin Luther King Jr. Site in Atlanta, Georgia—dedicated to commemorating the life of the civil rights leader—not only did I learn about Martin Luther King Jr., I also learned about the city of Atlanta and its significant role in the civil rights movement. There were informative exhibitions and films chronicling the fight for racial equality and the history of race relations in Atlanta. By visiting the site, I was able to gain a more in-depth understanding of Atlanta’s cultural history, which has always been crucial to the identity of the city itself.

In addition, in cities that are changing at a breakneck pace and becoming increasingly homogenous in their architecture and design, visiting historic sites can offer a broader and more refreshing perspective of the city. Many global cities have developed countless sleek, upscale shopping malls and restaurants, with identical-looking chain stores popping up across the city. While these developments are underway, many historic buildings and sites are being demolished to make way for the new. Thus, touring a city’s historic sites can be a rare and precious opportunity to experience the city in a meaningful and authentic way. In contrast to cookie-cutter shops and eateries that cater to excess consumerism, historic sites are often unique to a certain city and can be profoundly educational. For instance, one of the most famous historic sites in Tokyo, Japan, is the Meiji Jingu Shrine, a sacred shrine dedicated to the first emperor. Visiting the cultural landmark gave me illuminating insight into Japanese history and culture and was an experience that contrasted greatly to the rest of the buzzing modern metropolis of Tokyo.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that, of the three choices, the best way to learn about a city is to visit historic sites.

  文章的话题是比较常见的类型,要求考生“三选一”,选择一个方面进行论证。针对这类话题,要想有新意有突破是存在一定难度的。

  作者选择了“touring historic sites”这个角度进行写作,文章主体段的结构是递进,使用了非常明确的连接词“First of all”和“In addition”。
